Common questions
- The app is asking for my location. Why does a Wi-Fi tool need that?
- It does not want your location and never uses it. Apple treats the list of access points around you as a way of working out where you are, so macOS and iOS both withhold Wi-Fi network names from any app that has not been granted Location. Granting it reveals the names and nothing else changes. Refuse it and the app stays fully usable. Signal, noise, speed, channel, devices and history all work, and the names simply read as hidden. On iPhone you are only asked if you tap Show network name, never at launch.
- I granted Location and the names are still hidden.
- They should appear within a second or two without relaunching. If they do not, check Location Services and confirm Spyglass WiFi is listed and enabled. That is System Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services on the Mac, Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services on iPhone.
- The Devices list is empty, but I know there are devices on my network.
- That is the local network permission. On the Mac, System Settings › Privacy & Security › Local Network; on iPhone, Settings › Privacy & Security › Local Network. The app tells you when this is the reason rather than showing you an empty list and letting you assume your network is quiet. Some devices also never announce themselves, so press Scan to find those.
- Why does the iPhone app not show signal strength in dBm?

Because iOS does not make it available.
CoreWLAN, the framework the Mac app uses, is absent from the iOS SDK entirely, and the one API that carries signal strength is behind an entitlement Apple grants only to hotspot network operators. No iPhone app can show it. The app measures latency, jitter, loss and throughput instead, all of which it can measure honestly. - Why can the iPhone app not list nearby networks?
- Same reason. iOS has no API for scanning, for any app, without external hardware. If you have seen an App Store listing that appears to do this, it is either a Mac app sharing the listing or a screenshot the iPhone build cannot produce.
- Does the speed test use my data allowance?
- Only if you ask it to. The default times your own router and nothing leaves your building. Switching on Router and internet transfers up to about 65 MB against Cloudflare, and the amount is shown on screen before you start.
- My history is empty, or has gaps.
- History only accrues while the Mac app is running. Turn on Start at login in the app so it is watching from the moment you log in, which is the whole point of it. It keeps seven days and then rolls the oldest off.
- How do I delete my data?
- There is an Erase button in the Mac app's History pane, which clears both the view and the file on disk. Deleting the app removes everything either app has stored. Nothing exists anywhere else. See the privacy page.
- Is it really free?
- Yes. No in-app purchases, no subscription, no paid tier. If you want to say thanks, a review on the App Store is genuinely useful.

Worth asking. The honest caveat is that a fair number of requests turn out to be things Apple does not expose to apps at all, on iPhone especially. If that is the answer you will get the reason, not a shrug.
